Active CycleTours
Active CycleTours began with the desire of Ron and Shari Scheiblauer to lead interesting and challenging cycle tours for themselves and small groups of friends. Their goal has been to offer a service to others who appreciate the joys of the bicycle touring experience. Now, after more than fifteen years of leading tours, Ron and Shari have expanded that small group of friends into thousands of new friends.

Ron has been cycle touring since his first overnighter in 1964, when he was in high school. Ron and Shari have been active with the Southern Bicycle League (Atlanta) since the early 1970's in various capacities and still lead the League's most popular multi-day event, the Back to Blue Ridge Tour held every Labor Day weekend along the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Active Cycle Tours is a labor of love by lifetime cycle tourers who enjoy every ride as full participants. The tours are small and friendly, and Ron and Shari personally plan and lead every trip. Tours are limited to about twelve riders. Every tour features a variety of interesting things to do, both on and off the bikes, such as kayaking, whale watching or going to an evening, open-air concert. But since this is a bicycle tour, you will still ride reasonably challenging distances, averaging 50-60 miles a day. This means that there may be 80-90 mile days as well as a 40. The tours are for the serious cyclist who enjoys the cycling experience itself, and who is in condition and can take care of him/herself on the road. Every tour has sag service for luggage and emergencies, but generally the sag will be at the hotel at the end of each day with your luggage waiting for you, along with appropriate refreshments

Examples of past tours:

  • San Juan Islands; Located in the Strait of Juan de Fuca, between Seattle and Vancouver Island, the islands offer incredible water views, ferry rides and blackberry picking. We kayaked, went whale watching and toured Victoria and Butchart Gardens.
  • Tour to the Sun; Glacier National Park is one of the most spectacular places to ride to and through on the "Going to the Sun" highway. Along the way we stop at a natural hot springs in Paradise, Montana.
  • Northern Cascades Roller Coaster; Although no more difficult than the riding we do in North Georgia, the Cascades offer five days with one or two passes each and long distances between overnights, so this is one for those who want to test themselves.
  • Northern Idaho Panhandle
  • Kentucky Bluegrass; A real surprise with great ridge riding and historic towns such as Bardstown (Steven Foster State Park), Shakertown and Berea. We stay an extra day in Shakertown to tour the restored Shaker village and take a boat ride down the Kentucky River.
  • Canadian Rockies; Between Calgary and Jasper lie Banff, Lake Louise and the Icefields Parkway, where we take a tour onto an actual glacier. Except for two climbs, this is basically a valley ride with unbelievable mountain vistas.
